You don’t need to have any drawing experience to try this exercise in Blind Contour Drawing developed by Kimon Nicolaides. Pick up a pencil and a piece of paper and find something to draw—a crumpled up tissue, a feather, a complex flower (the more complicated the better.)
Position yourself so the paper is on the table and your drawing hand is over it, but your head is turned away and you are looking at your object, whatever that may be.
Begin by looking at the object before settling your gaze on one of its edges, and very, very slowly, move your eye along that edge and at the same time move the pencil. Don’t lift your pencil off the paper. Don’t worry about what the pencil is actually doing and do not turn and look at the drawing.
Continue doing this for as long as you can—a minimum of five minutes if possible (you can set a timer if you like)—but ideally longer. Don’t turn your head and look, just keep the eye and the hand moving slowly, as if you were an ant crawling along the surface, feeling the ups and downs, the twists and turns of the edge.
You cannot do this exercise too slowly. Wherever your eye follows an edge, your pencil will follow. When you have finished, your “drawing” will look nothing like the object, but you will have experienced seeing the object in a totally new way.
